Terms of Service

Last updated: July 28, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Beacon iOS application and website at beaconfocus.app, operated by John Cain ("we," "us," or "our"). By using Beacon, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect and use information.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Beacon. By using the app, you represent that you meet this requirement and have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms.

Account

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You must provide accurate information and may not impersonate others. You may sign in with Apple or email and password as offered in the app.

You may delete your account at any time in Settings → Delete account. Deletion is permanent. See the Account deletion section below and our Privacy Policy for what is removed and what may be retained.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

Screen Time and device permissions

Beacon requires Screen Time and related iOS permissions to block apps you select. Authorization may require Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode—handled by Apple on your device, not by Beacon. You acknowledge that blocking behavior depends on Apple's APIs and your device settings. We are not responsible for failures caused by iOS limitations, OS updates, or misconfiguration.

Circles and social features

Circles are user-created groups. You are responsible for who you invite and what you share. Other Circle members may see your display name, focus-related activity, and subscription tier within that Circle. We may enforce limits on circle creation, membership, Beacons, Monk challenges, and invitations as described in the app and these Terms.

Beacon is a focus and accountability tool, not a crisis or emergency service. Do not rely on it for safety-critical or medical use.

Beacons, Monk Mode, and scheduled sessions

Social features such as Beacons, Monk Mode challenges, and scheduled session invites are subject to in-app limits, subscription tiers, and server-side rules. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features at any time.

Subscription tiers (Free, Beacon Pro, and Beacon Pro+)

Beacon offers a free tier and two optional paid subscriptions: Beacon Pro and Beacon Pro+. Feature availability depends on your current tier and, for some Focus and Monk features, the tier of the other person involved. Exact gates are enforced in the app.

Free

Beacon Pro

Example US pricing: $2.99 per month. The price shown in the app / App Store at purchase applies and may vary by region.

Beacon Pro+

Example US pricing: $9.99 per month. The price shown in the app / App Store at purchase applies and may vary by region.

Pricing and trials

Pricing, free-trial eligibility, and localized prices are shown in the app before purchase. We no longer offer a single $5.99 Pro plan. Prices may change; the App Store price at the time of purchase controls. If a free trial is offered, it converts to a paid subscription unless canceled before the trial ends. Trial eligibility is determined by Apple; not all users qualify.

Billing and renewal

If your subscription ends (lapse)

If Beacon Pro or Beacon Pro+ expires or is canceled:

Refunds

Refund requests are handled by Apple, not by Beacon. Contact Apple Support or report a problem in your purchase history. We cannot issue App Store refunds directly.

Changes to features or pricing

We may add, remove, or modify Free, Pro, or Pro+ features. Material price changes for subscriptions are governed by App Store policies and will be communicated as required by Apple.

Intellectual property

Beacon, including its design, code, and branding, is owned by John Cain. You receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app for personal, non-commercial purposes. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works of the app except as permitted by law.

Disclaimer of warranties

Beacon is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee uninterrupted service, error-free operation, or that the app will meet your specific needs.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, John Cain shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of Beacon. Our total liability for any claim related to Beacon shall not exceed the amount you paid us for the app in the twelve months before the claim (or USD $50 if you have not paid for the app).

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability; in those cases, our liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Account deletion

When you delete your account, we remove your authentication record, user profile, circle memberships, and related account data as described in our Privacy Policy. Some historical records may remain—for example, anonymized or de-identified activity in shared Circles, challenge-related documents, or server-side rate-limit data. Retained data is not used to identify you after deletion.

Deleting your account does not delete the Beacon app from your device or revoke Screen Time permissions; you may need to adjust those separately in iOS Settings.

Deleting your Beacon account does not cancel Beacon Pro, Beacon Pro+, or any other Beacon subscription. Cancel any Beacon subscription separately through Apple before or after account deletion to avoid further charges.

Changes

We may modify these Terms or the app at any time. Material changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance. If you do not agree to updated Terms, stop using Beacon and delete your account.

Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if we reasonably believe your use poses risk to the service or other users. You may stop using Beacon at any time by deleting the app and your account.

Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which John Cain resides, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

Any dispute arising from these Terms or Beacon shall first be addressed by contacting us at beaconfocussupport@gmail.com. To the extent permitted by law, you agree to resolve disputes individually and not as part of a class action.

General

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding Beacon.
